Makkah completes major urban upgrades ahead of 2025 Hajj pilgrimage

The Royal Commission for Makkah City has completed infrastructure improvements around the Grand Mosque to enhance pedestrian access and crowd management ahead of Hajj 2025.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Royal Commission for Makkah City has completed extensive infrastructure and urban development projects in the central area surrounding the Grand Mosque in preparation for the 2025 Hajj season.

The improvements aim to enhance pedestrian movement, optimize crowd distribution, and increase the operational readiness of high-density zones around the mosque.

As part of these upgrades, pedestrian sidewalks and walkways have been expanded over an area of 235,000 square meters, ensuring safer and more convenient access to the Grand Mosque from major transportation hubs and nearby facilities.

To protect pilgrims from extreme heat, more than 30,000 square meters of shaded areas have been installed, offering increased comfort while walking or waiting.

Prayer areas have also been expanded, accommodating more than 60,000 additional worshippers to ease congestion, particularly during peak prayer times.

A specialized heat-resistant surface coating was applied across six major locations, including Ajyad Street, Ibrahim Al Khalil Street, and the Clock Towers Plaza, reducing surface temperatures by up to 15°C across more than 50,000 square meters.

To assist pilgrims, a unified visual guidance system with updated signage and wayfinding tools has been introduced throughout the central zone.

Electric golf carts have been deployed to improve mobility for elderly pilgrims and individuals with disabilities, using designated lanes for convenience.

Additionally, commercial storefronts have been reorganized to ensure a consistent urban appearance, and more barber shops have been equipped to meet the needs of pilgrims.

These initiatives are part of a larger urban strategy designed to improve pilgrimage readiness while ensuring high-quality services throughout the year.

By integrating Makkah’s public transport system and enhancing both visual and functional coherence, the Royal Commission aims to create a safer and more efficient environment for all worshippers.
